Group counselling can be beneficial as we are all navigating the common lived experience of hearing loss.
Group Counselling
Whether you are an individual with hearing loss or you are the parent of a child with hearing loss, groups can act as a support network and a sounding board. People often remark on how rewarding group counselling can be.
You can expect to meet people who have different personalities and backgrounds, and experience how they look at situations in different ways. By seeing how other people handle their problems and make positive changes, you can discover a whole range of strategies for resolving your own concerns.
Sessions are safe spaces where you can talk about what is impacting your life and feel supported by other group members. A qualified therapist facilitates every session, and all sessions are accessible, inclusive and confidential.
"When we first found out our son was deaf, I feared for his future. I now know my son can live an active fulfilling life. Knowing this is priceless."
"Group counselling helped me to reframe the way I think about things and I now feel more confident."
Below is more information about what counselling is and how it can help.
One-to-one Counselling
Life can be stressful and yours, or your child’s hearing loss, may be contributing to that stress. The BeHeard by MED-EL Service gives you that space to talk it through. Therapeutic counselling can be used to explore a range of themes including depression, anxiety, shame, loss, grief, panic, parenting challenges, and relationship issues.
There are many themes, but every family’s experience is different. If you are a parent currently processing the diagnosis of your child’s hearing loss, you may be experiencing a sense of loss and grief, and possibly some anxiety about your child's future.
For adults with progressive hearing loss, there can be lots of questions around identity. In this population, individuals are more likely to experience discrimination, depression and anxiety, and for those with sudden onset deafness, this can be particularly traumatic.
"I come away from sessions feeling lighter, having worked through deep-rooted issues."
"Thank you for helping us through the last few months. Your sessions have always left us with new knowledge and approaches."
The BeHeard by MED-EL service is there for you before, during and after the provision of your MED-EL hearing implant.
Counselling for MED-EL Users
The journey to hearing is such a transformative one. The transition from having very little or no hearing to a world of sound can bring up all kinds of thoughts and feelings.
This is why the BeHeard by MED-EL service is also available to adults and families who are living life with their MED-EL hearing implant.
We bring small groups together to talk about a range of themes which can range from anxiety all the way through to general confidence and how we relate to others.
"While the surgery fixed my hearing it didn't fix my self esteem. Counselling helped."
"I wish I'd had this type of support when my daughter was diagnosed as deaf two weeks after being born."
